Protecting your Child's Teeth

There are several ways to make sure that your child maintains a beautiful smile well into adulthood. It is necessary to prevent cavities with regular check ups, brushing, flossing and tongue cleaning. At every check up, the dentist will have an opportunity to provide you with age appropriate tips for the care of your child’s teeth.

Ways to try to avoid dental injuries:

When children play sports you must be sure they are wearing the proper gear for that particular sport. For example, head gear and a mouth guard for contact sports.
Always use a car seat for young children and check to see that everyone in the car is wearing a seat belt.
Child-proof your home to prevent falls and electrical injuries.

These preventive measures will go a long way in protecting your child’s teeth; but, if your child suffers from a dental problem you can follow some simple steps to try to avoid further damage.

What to do when your child has a dental emergency:

Toothaches

If your child has a toothache, call your dentist and visit the office right away.
To help control the symptoms you can use over the counter children’s medication in the correct dose for your child’s age and weight.
Do not put heat or aspirin on the sore area.
You can put cold compresses or ice wrapped in a towel or cloth on the area of the pain.
For comfort rinse the mouth with water.

Chipped or Fractured Teeth
If your child needs urgent dental treatment call your dentist right away. Keep the emergency number nearby in case you need it after hours. The faster you react the better your chances are of saving the tooth and preventing further damage or infection.

First of all contact your dentist immediately.
Try to find the broken tooth fragment and place it in cold milk or water and bring it to the dental office.
Rinse the mouth with water and apply cold compresses to the area to reduce swelling.

Tooth Loss and Serious Injury

If it is a baby tooth that gets knocked out; the tooth should not be replanted because it can damage the developing permanent tooth. Contact your dentist anyway.
If it is a permanent tooth that gets knocked out, find the tooth and rinse it gently in cold water. Do not scrub it clean with soap, only use water. If you can, place the tooth back in the socket immediately and hold it there with a clean gauze or wash cloth. If you can’t place it back in the socket put it in a clean container with cold milk, saliva or water. Go to the dentist right away.
If your child suffers a severe blow to the head or jaw fracture you need to seek immediate medical attention. A severe head injury can be life threatening or cause permanent damage. Keep in mind that an emergency medical team such as an ambulance or care flight might be able to reach you faster than you can get to the hospital. Dial 911 immediately so they can get there promptly and at the same time guide you with instructions on what to do next.

Toothbrushing Less Than Twice a Day Linked to Increased CV Risk!

Individuals who do not brush their teeth twice a day have an increased risk of heart disease, a new study shows [1].

The study was published online May 27, 2010 in BMJ; corresponding author is Prof Richard Watt (University College London, UK).
The researchers note that while it has been established that inflammation in the body (including mouth and gums) plays an important role in the buildup of atherosclerosis, this is the first study to investigate whether the number of times individuals brush their teeth has any bearing on the risk of developing heart disease.

They analyzed data from more than 11 000 adults who took part in the Scottish Health Survey, in which individuals were asked about lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, physical activity, and oral health routines. Questions asked included how often they visited the dentist and how often they brushed their teeth (twice a day, once a day, or less than once a day).

Information was also collated on medical history and family history of heart disease and blood pressure. Blood samples were taken from a subgroup of participants and tested for C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen levels. The data gathered from the interviews were linked to hospital admissions and deaths.

Results showed generally good oral hygiene practices, with 62% of participants saying they visited the dentist every six months and 71% reporting that they brushed their teeth twice a day. After adjustment for established risk factors, it was found that participants who reported less frequent toothbrushing had an increased risk of heart disease compared with people who brushed their teeth twice a day. Participants who had poor oral hygiene also had increased levels of CRP and fibrinogen.

The researchers say: "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to show an association between a single-item self-reported measure of toothbrushing and incident cardiovascular disease in a large representative sample of adults without overt cardiovascular disease."
They add: "Our study suggests a possible role of poor oral hygiene in the risk of cardiovascular disease via systemic inflammation. Raised inflammatory and homoeostatic responses as well as lipid metabolism disturbance caused by periodontal infection might be possible pathways underlying the observed association between periodontal disease and the increased risk for cardiovascular disease."
But they note that further studies are needed to confirm whether the observed association between oral health behavior and cardiovascular disease is in fact causal or merely a risk marker.

Cavities Basics for Children!

Most of the time you do not even realize that you have them. This is one of the reasons why you should have regular visits to the dentist, about every six months. How do I get cavities?
When you eat a snack containing sugar or carbs and don’t brush your teeth right afterwards, your body converts part of your snack into acid that will attack your teeth. If you don't see your dentist regularly, the acid can continue to attack further inside the tooth and cause decay and pain!

How do you prevent cavities?

Brush and floss your teeth at least twice daily. If you do not floss, you might be cleaning just 65% of each tooth. Ask our dentist how to floss correctly.
Consume lots of dairy products - Yogurt, cheese and all other milk products contain calcium and other nutritional ingredients which will help the development of strong teeth and bones, and keep a nice smile free of any disease.
Limit your intake of sweets, candy and sugary drinks.
